Dear Mr. President:
Supporting Ukraine’s struggle for freedom against the tyrannical and lawless Russian invasion of Ukraine’s sovereign territory is one of the most urgent missions the West has faced in a generation. So far, Russian forces have been pinned down by fierce Ukrainian resistance, and we must redouble our efforts to prevent a brutal and illegal takeover of Ukraine. We urge your administration to work with Poland and our NATO allies to expedite the transfer of air power, air defense systems and other combat and support capabilities including the United States, NATO allies NATO and other European partners have an urgent need for Ukraine.
While we welcome the lethal aid your administration has sent to Ukraine so far, we strongly disagree with your decision to delay and deny Poland the ability to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine. Your administration defends the billion dollars worth of defense items provided to Ukraine over the past 13 months and has definitively stated that there are no restrictions in your current suite of authorities to adequately respond to the anarchic and bloody invasion of Ukraine by Russia. We implore you to direct your Ministry of Defense to immediately facilitate the transfer of aircraft, air defense systems and other capabilities by and through our NATO partners.
Today, Russia’s assault is directed against the Ukrainian people, public infrastructure, farms, hospitals, day care centers, workplaces and even their homes. Ukraine’s military desperately needs more lethal help today to defend the foundations of their country that will keep it functioning in the future. We cannot allow Putin to gain an advantage because he has not provided Ukrainians with the weapons, ammunition, communications equipment and medical supplies they need.
We implore you to act without delay to provide the urgently needed air power that will strengthen the ability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend their country and save civilian lives.
